My husband & I were shocked when we called our city to find out where we could drop off our old batteries for recycling...they told us just to put them in the garbage and that they would have no harmful effects on the landfill. That answer didn't sit well with us since we encourage all recycling, so we did some more investigating. You can take your batteries to your local IKEA store and they will recycle them for you!

my husband works for GM and he takes ours in once or twice a year. We usually use rechargables, but when we can't, I set aside in a box in the garage. the county has a day in September for all "toxic" things that can't go in your weekly recycling (we have curbside here in my little town of 7000) but we pay mightily for it too. a good fee but wish they took more stuff. I rarely have garbage as I compost (being a vegetarian makes that easy) the hardest thing to get rid of is computer parts as there is only one place in Michigan that does that and its far away.
Thanks, very useful!
